Your local decks contractor in Salem
Waterfront Construction provides professional decks for homeowners throughout Salem and nearby towns. From our base in Northborough we keep response times short and standards high — fully licensed and insured, owner-supervised on every job, and committed to leaving your Salem home better than we found it.
Salem is in Essex County, Massachusetts, established in 1626 and home to roughly 44,500 people. That makes it one of the oldest communities in the state, so the older streets carry genuine antique stock — post-and-beam frames, hand-cut joinery, plaster over lath, and additions layered on across three centuries. We know the town well — from The Point, Salem Willows and downtown Salem to the quieter streets — and our decks crews reach Salem quickly from nearby Northborough. It is about 50 miles from our Northborough shop — about an hour in normal traffic.
We treat your Salem home the way we'd want our own treated: clean job sites, clear daily communication, and respect for your time and property. When the decks project wraps, the only thing we leave behind is work you'll be proud to show off.
Whether it's a single room or a whole-home project, we bring the same care, licensing and insurance to every Salem job — and we don't consider it done until you're completely happy with the result.
For the full detail on how we approach this work — materials, process and what to expect — see our decks page.

How far is Waterfront Construction from Salem, MA?+
Our shop is at 44 Bearfoot Road, Northborough, MA 01532, about 50 miles from Salem — about an hour in normal traffic. That is close enough for us to get out for an estimate quickly, come back for a snag without making a production of it, and keep crews on your job rather than stuck on the road.
Have you worked near Salem?+
Yes. One of our documented projects nearby is the Colonial Home Addition — Lynnfield, MA — A full home addition and exterior transformation on a classic New England home in Lynnfield. You can see the full photo album on our site, along with other the North Shore jobs. We're happy to give references closer to Salem on request.
Which nearby communities do you also cover?+

Do I need a permit for decks in Salem, MA?+
Yes, almost certainly. Massachusetts exempts a deck only if it is under 200 sq ft, under 30 inches high, unattached to the house and not serving a required exit door — all four at once. Any deck off your back door needs a permit, and we file it for you. We file it with Salem's building and inspectional services department as a Registered Home Improvement Contractor (MA HIC #196540).
Composite or wood — which is better?+
Composite costs more up front but needs almost no maintenance and lasts longer. Wood is budget-friendly and classic but needs periodic sealing. We help you weigh the trade-offs.

Almost every real deck needs a building permit in Massachusetts.
780 CMR exempts a deck only if it meets ALL four conditions at once: no more than 200 sq ft, no more than 30 inches above grade at any point, not attached to the dwelling, and not serving a required exit door. A deck off your back door, or any deck attached to the house, fails that test — so plan on a permit and an inspection. We file it for you.
For decks work in the City of Salem, the filing goes to Salem's building and inspectional services department. As a Massachusetts Registered Home Improvement Contractor (HIC #196540) we pull the permit in our name, book the inspections and meet the inspector on site — you never have to take a day off for it. Requirements do change, so we confirm the current position with Salem's office before any work starts.
