Decks · Quincy, MA

Your local decks contractor in Quincy

Many Quincy homes were built long before the materials and codes we work with today, which is exactly why decks here rewards a contractor who has opened up a few walls locally. Waterfront Construction has been doing that across Greater Boston since 2018 — licensed, insured and owner-supervised.

Quincy is in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, established in 1792 and home to roughly 102,000 people. It was settled well before the Republic, which usually means a core of Federal and Greek Revival homes surrounded by later infill — plenty of hand-framed structure, and rooflines never meant to carry today's insulation. We know the town well — from Quincy Center, Wollaston and North Quincy to the quieter streets — and our decks crews reach Quincy quickly from nearby Northborough. It is about 40 miles from our Northborough shop — about an hour in normal traffic.

Timelines are where most contractors lose trust. We give Quincy homeowners a start date we can hold, sequence the trades so nobody waits on anybody, and tell you the same day if something moves. A realistic schedule beats an optimistic one every time.

Call and you get a person, usually the owner. Message us and you get an answer within one business day. On a decks project in Quincy that responsiveness isn't a courtesy — it's what keeps the job moving.

How far is Waterfront Construction from Quincy, MA?+

Yes. Do I need a permit for decks in Quincy, MA?+

Yes, almost certainly. Massachusetts exempts a deck only if it is under 200 sq ft, under 30 inches high, unattached to the house and not serving a required exit door — all four at once. Any deck off your back door needs a permit, and we file it for you. We file it with Quincy's building and inspectional services department as a Registered Home Improvement Contractor (MA HIC #196540).

Composite or wood — which is better?+

Composite costs more up front but needs almost no maintenance and lasts longer. Wood is budget-friendly and classic but needs periodic sealing. We help you weigh the trade-offs.

Permits in Quincy

Almost every real deck needs a building permit in Massachusetts.

780 CMR exempts a deck only if it meets ALL four conditions at once: no more than 200 sq ft, no more than 30 inches above grade at any point, not attached to the dwelling, and not serving a required exit door. A deck off your back door, or any deck attached to the house, fails that test — so plan on a permit and an inspection. We file it for you.

For decks work in the City of Quincy, the filing goes to Quincy's building and inspectional services department. As a Massachusetts Registered Home Improvement Contractor (HIC #196540) we pull the permit in our name, book the inspections and meet the inspector on site — you never have to take a day off for it. Requirements do change, so we confirm the current position with Quincy's office before any work starts.

Source: 780 CMR ch. 51 (Massachusetts Residential Code), Part 2 §105 R105.2, “Work exempt from permit”. This is general information, not a substitute for your building department's own determination.
