Your local decks contractor in Boston

If you have been putting off decks in Boston because you dread the process, that is usually a communication problem rather than a construction one. We give Boston homeowners an itemised estimate, a start date we can hold, and one person to call — then we keep to it.

Boston is in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, established in 1630 and home to roughly 676,000 people. That makes it one of the oldest communities in the state, so the older streets carry genuine antique stock — post-and-beam frames, hand-cut joinery, plaster over lath, and additions layered on across three centuries. We know the town well — from Back Bay, the South End and Dorchester to the quieter streets — and our decks crews reach Boston quickly from nearby Northborough. It is about 35 miles from our Northborough shop — about 45 minutes to an hour in normal traffic.

We treat your Boston home the way we'd want our own treated: clean job sites, clear daily communication, and respect for your time and property. When the decks project wraps, the only thing we leave behind is work you'll be proud to show off.

Ready when you are: reach out for a free, no-obligation estimate and we'll walk you through exactly how we'd approach your Boston decks project — clear pricing, a realistic timeline, and answers to every question.

For the full detail on how we approach this work — materials, process and what to expect — see our decks page.

Decks in Boston — FAQs

📞 Call (508) 691-8113
Do you provide decks in Boston, MA?+

Yes — Boston is right in our service area. We're a Northborough-based, licensed and insured contractor (MA HIC #196540) and regularly serve Boston homeowners across Greater Boston with professional decks. Call (508) 691-8113 for a free estimate.

Which parts of Boston do you cover?+

All of Boston — including Back Bay, the South End, Dorchester and Jamaica Plain. No matter the neighborhood or the age of your home, we bring the same licensed, insured decks craftsmanship to every Boston job.

How far is Waterfront Construction from Boston, MA?+

Our shop is at 44 Bearfoot Road, Northborough, MA 01532, about 35 miles from Boston — about 45 minutes to an hour in normal traffic. That is close enough for us to get out for an estimate quickly, come back for a snag without making a production of it, and keep crews on your job rather than stuck on the road.

Have you worked near Boston?+

Yes. One of our documented projects nearby is the Front Porch & Home Addition — Needham, MA — A front porch addition in Needham — documented step by step, from the original small entry through foundation, framing, and the new full-width farmer's porch. You can see the full photo album on our site, along with other Greater Boston jobs. We're happy to give references closer to Boston on request.

Which nearby communities do you also cover?+

We work throughout Greater Boston from our Northborough base — including Stoneham, Randolph, Westwood, Winthrop and Weymouth. In total we cover 150+ towns across MetroWest, Greater Boston, the North Shore and Southern New Hampshire.

Do I need a permit for decks in Boston, MA?+

Yes, almost certainly. Massachusetts exempts a deck only if it is under 200 sq ft, under 30 inches high, unattached to the house and not serving a required exit door — all four at once. Any deck off your back door needs a permit, and we file it for you. We file it with Boston's building and inspectional services department as a Registered Home Improvement Contractor (MA HIC #196540).

Composite or wood — which is better?+

Composite costs more up front but needs almost no maintenance and lasts longer. Wood is budget-friendly and classic but needs periodic sealing. We help you weigh the trade-offs.

Permits in Boston

Almost every real deck needs a building permit in Massachusetts.

780 CMR exempts a deck only if it meets ALL four conditions at once: no more than 200 sq ft, no more than 30 inches above grade at any point, not attached to the dwelling, and not serving a required exit door. A deck off your back door, or any deck attached to the house, fails that test — so plan on a permit and an inspection. We file it for you.

For decks work in the City of Boston, the filing goes to Boston's building and inspectional services department. As a Massachusetts Registered Home Improvement Contractor (HIC #196540) we pull the permit in our name, book the inspections and meet the inspector on site — you never have to take a day off for it. Requirements do change, so we confirm the current position with Boston's office before any work starts.

Source: 780 CMR ch. 51 (Massachusetts Residential Code), Part 2 §105 R105.2, “Work exempt from permit”. This is general information, not a substitute for your building department's own determination.
