Your local decks contractor in Winchester

Good decks in Winchester is mostly invisible: the preparation underneath, the flashing you never see, the measurement taken twice. Waterfront Construction builds that way because the owner signs off on every job personally — and because a callback costs us far more than doing it right the first time.

Winchester is in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, established in 1850 and home to roughly 23,000 people. Its growth came with the mills and the railroads, so much of the older housing is mid-1800s worker and merchant stock — balloon framing, deep sash windows, and porches that have usually been rebuilt at least once. For a contractor that makes it a mid-sized town with a genuinely varied housing stock, from the oldest streets to recent construction. It sits in Greater Boston. It is about 35 miles from our Northborough shop — about 45 minutes to an hour in normal traffic. Being close keeps estimates and site visits quick.

Permitting and inspections vary town to town across Greater Boston, and Winchester is no different. As your licensed contractor we file what the building department requires and schedule inspections around the work, so the paperwork never becomes your problem — or your delay.

We stand behind what we build. If something isn't right after we've gone, you call and we come back — that's the point of being licensed, insured and easy to find in Winchester, rather than a number that stops answering.

Decks in Winchester — FAQs

📞 Call (508) 691-8113
Do you provide decks in Winchester, MA?+

Yes — Winchester is right in our service area. We're a Northborough-based, licensed and insured contractor (MA HIC #196540) and regularly serve Winchester homeowners across Greater Boston with professional decks. Call (508) 691-8113 for a free estimate.

How far is Waterfront Construction from Winchester, MA?+

Our shop is at 44 Bearfoot Road, Northborough, MA 01532, about 35 miles from Winchester — about 45 minutes to an hour in normal traffic. That is close enough for us to get out for an estimate quickly, come back for a snag without making a production of it, and keep crews on your job rather than stuck on the road.

Have you worked near Winchester?+

Yes. One of our documented projects nearby is the Front Porch & Home Addition — Needham, MA — A front porch addition in Needham — documented step by step, from the original small entry through foundation, framing, and the new full-width farmer's porch. You can see the full photo album on our site, along with other Greater Boston jobs. We're happy to give references closer to Winchester on request.

Which nearby communities do you also cover?+

We work throughout Greater Boston from our Northborough base — including Brookline, Arlington, Wellesley, Lexington and Stoughton. In total we cover 150+ towns across MetroWest, Greater Boston, the North Shore and Southern New Hampshire.

Do I need a permit for decks in Winchester, MA?+

Yes, almost certainly. Massachusetts exempts a deck only if it is under 200 sq ft, under 30 inches high, unattached to the house and not serving a required exit door — all four at once. Any deck off your back door needs a permit, and we file it for you. We file it with Winchester's building department as a Registered Home Improvement Contractor (MA HIC #196540).

Composite or wood — which is better?+

Composite costs more up front but needs almost no maintenance and lasts longer. Wood is budget-friendly and classic but needs periodic sealing. We help you weigh the trade-offs.

Permits in Winchester

Almost every real deck needs a building permit in Massachusetts.

780 CMR exempts a deck only if it meets ALL four conditions at once: no more than 200 sq ft, no more than 30 inches above grade at any point, not attached to the dwelling, and not serving a required exit door. A deck off your back door, or any deck attached to the house, fails that test — so plan on a permit and an inspection. We file it for you.

For decks work in the Town of Winchester, the filing goes to Winchester's building department. As a Massachusetts Registered Home Improvement Contractor (HIC #196540) we pull the permit in our name, book the inspections and meet the inspector on site — you never have to take a day off for it. Requirements do change, so we confirm the current position with Winchester's office before any work starts.

Source: 780 CMR ch. 51 (Massachusetts Residential Code), Part 2 §105 R105.2, “Work exempt from permit”. This is general information, not a substitute for your building department's own determination.
