Decks · Southbridge, MA

Your local decks contractor in Southbridge

Waterfront Construction has been building and remodelling for Southbridge and the rest of Central Massachusetts since 2018. We are licensed, insured, and deliberately small: enough crew to keep a schedule, few enough jobs at once that your decks project never becomes the one that gets squeezed.

Southbridge is in Worcester County, Massachusetts, established in 1816 and home to roughly 17,500 people. Its growth came with the mills and the railroads, so much of the older housing is mid-1800s worker and merchant stock — balloon framing, deep sash windows, and porches that have usually been rebuilt at least once. For a contractor that makes it a mid-sized town with a genuinely varied housing stock, from the oldest streets to recent construction. It sits in Central Massachusetts. It is about 35 miles from our Northborough shop — about 45 minutes to an hour in normal traffic. Being close keeps estimates and site visits quick.

If you may sell within a few years, what you choose matters as much as what you spend. We're straight with Southbridge homeowners about which parts of a decks project tend to return at resale in Central Massachusetts and which are purely for your own enjoyment. Both are good reasons to build.

We stand behind what we build. If something isn't right after we've gone, you call and we come back — that's the point of being licensed, insured and easy to find in Southbridge, rather than a number that stops answering.

For the full detail on how we approach this work — materials, process and what to expect — see our decks page.

Decks in Southbridge — FAQs

📞 Call (508) 691-8113
Do you provide decks in Southbridge, MA?+

Yes — Southbridge is right in our service area. We're a Northborough-based, licensed and insured contractor (MA HIC #196540) and regularly serve Southbridge homeowners across Central Massachusetts with professional decks. Call (508) 691-8113 for a free estimate.

How far is Waterfront Construction from Southbridge, MA?+

Our shop is at 44 Bearfoot Road, Northborough, MA 01532, about 35 miles from Southbridge — about 45 minutes to an hour in normal traffic. That is close enough for us to get out for an estimate quickly, come back for a snag without making a production of it, and keep crews on your job rather than stuck on the road.

Have you worked near Southbridge?+

Yes. One of our documented projects nearby is the Composite Pool Deck — Salem, NH — A low-maintenance gray composite deck wrapping an above-ground pool in Salem, NH — from framing through the finished, furnished deck. You can see the full photo album on our site, along with other Central Massachusetts jobs. We're happy to give references closer to Southbridge on request.

Which nearby communities do you also cover?+

We work throughout Central Massachusetts from our Northborough base — including Sterling, Cherry Valley, Millbury, Boylston and West Boylston. In total we cover 150+ towns across MetroWest, Greater Boston, the North Shore and Southern New Hampshire.

Do I need a permit for decks in Southbridge, MA?+

Yes, almost certainly. Massachusetts exempts a deck only if it is under 200 sq ft, under 30 inches high, unattached to the house and not serving a required exit door — all four at once. Any deck off your back door needs a permit, and we file it for you. We file it with Southbridge's building and inspectional services department as a Registered Home Improvement Contractor (MA HIC #196540).

Composite or wood — which is better?+

Composite costs more up front but needs almost no maintenance and lasts longer. Wood is budget-friendly and classic but needs periodic sealing. We help you weigh the trade-offs.

Permits in Southbridge

Almost every real deck needs a building permit in Massachusetts.

780 CMR exempts a deck only if it meets ALL four conditions at once: no more than 200 sq ft, no more than 30 inches above grade at any point, not attached to the dwelling, and not serving a required exit door. A deck off your back door, or any deck attached to the house, fails that test — so plan on a permit and an inspection. We file it for you.

For decks work in the City of Southbridge, the filing goes to Southbridge's building and inspectional services department. As a Massachusetts Registered Home Improvement Contractor (HIC #196540) we pull the permit in our name, book the inspections and meet the inspector on site — you never have to take a day off for it. Requirements do change, so we confirm the current position with Southbridge's office before any work starts.

Source: 780 CMR ch. 51 (Massachusetts Residential Code), Part 2 §105 R105.2, “Work exempt from permit”. This is general information, not a substitute for your building department's own determination.
