In a climate with a real winter, timing is not a detail. Some trades genuinely cannot work below a temperature; others can work year-round and are simply busier in July because that is when everybody calls. Knowing which is which gets you a better crew, a shorter wait, and occasionally a better price.
What is genuinely weather-bound
- Exterior painting. Most coatings need surface and air temperature above roughly 50°F with falling humidity. In practice that is late April to mid-October here, and the good crews are booked solid inside it.
- Concrete and footings. Cold-weather pours are possible with additives and blankets, and they cost more. Frost-depth footings are far easier before the ground freezes.
- Roof openings. A second storey or a dormer means the house is open for days. That is scheduled for late spring to early autumn for a reason.
- Excavation. Frozen ground is slow and expensive to dig.
- Siding is workable in cold but vinyl becomes brittle and less forgiving in deep cold, and caulking and sealants have minimum application temperatures.
What is not
- Kitchens and bathrooms. Entirely interior once materials are on site. Winter is arguably the best time — crews are less stretched and you are indoors anyway.
- Interior painting. Year-round, and cheaper in an empty or quiet house.
- Basement finishing. Interior, and a good use of the months when nobody wants to be outside.
- Attic conversion. Interior, though the attic is genuinely unpleasant to work in during a July heatwave.
- Windows and doors, one opening at a time. Cold-weather replacement is routine — the opening is only exposed for a couple of hours.
The booking calendar nobody tells you about
The busy season for exterior work is roughly May through October, and calls for it start arriving in March. The practical consequence is that the crew you want in June is committed in March.

Winter is underrated for interior work
There is a genuine advantage to booking interior work between December and March in this region. Crews that are weather-blocked outside are available, schedules are easier to hold because nothing is waiting on a forecast, and permit departments are usually quicker than they are in a busy spring.
The trade-off is living with it. Dust control matters more when the windows stay shut, and there is no putting the kids outside. It is worth asking the contractor how they seal the work area before you commit — the answer separates the crews who have thought about it from those who have not, which is part of what to check before hiring anyone.
Build the permit time into the season
The mistake is planning the season around the build and forgetting what comes before it. Design and permitting commonly take one to three months on an addition, and review times stretch when a building department is busy in spring — the realistic timeline is here and what needs a permit is here.
Which means the honest answer to 'when should I start' is usually one season earlier than it feels. If you want to be building in June, you want drawings moving in February.
