Painting · Salem, MA

Your local painting contractor in Salem

Many Salem homes were built long before the materials and codes we work with today, which is exactly why painting here rewards a contractor who has opened up a few walls locally. Waterfront Construction has been doing that across the North Shore since 2018 — licensed, insured and owner-supervised.

Salem is in Essex County, Massachusetts, established in 1626 and home to roughly 44,500 people. That makes it one of the oldest communities in the state, so the older streets carry genuine antique stock — post-and-beam frames, hand-cut joinery, plaster over lath, and additions layered on across three centuries. We know the town well — from The Point, Salem Willows and downtown Salem to the quieter streets — and our painting crews reach Salem quickly from nearby Northborough. It is about 50 miles from our Northborough shop — about an hour in normal traffic.

Permitting and inspections vary town to town across the North Shore, and Salem is no different. As your licensed contractor we file what the building department requires and schedule inspections around the work, so the paperwork never becomes your problem — or your delay.

You're allowed to change your mind. Scope shifts on plenty of Salem projects once walls are open or samples are on site, and we re-price it in writing before anything proceeds — never quietly added to the final bill.

For the full detail on how we approach this work — materials, process and what to expect — see our painting page.

How far is Waterfront Construction from Salem, MA?+

Our shop is at 44 Bearfoot Road, Northborough, MA 01532, about 50 miles from Salem — about an hour in normal traffic. That is close enough for us to get out for an estimate quickly, come back for a snag without making a production of it, and keep crews on your job rather than stuck on the road.

Have you worked near Salem?+

Yes. One of our documented projects nearby is the Colonial Home Addition — Lynnfield, MA — A full home addition and exterior transformation on a classic New England home in Lynnfield. You can see the full photo album on our site, along with other the North Shore jobs. We're happy to give references closer to Salem on request.

Which nearby communities do you also cover?+

Do I need a permit for painting in Salem, MA?+

No. Massachusetts lists painting as work exempt from a building permit. If the job turns out to need electrical, plumbing or gas work, those trades carry their own permits — we pull those if they apply. We file it with Salem's building and inspectional services department as a Registered Home Improvement Contractor (MA HIC #196540).

How long will the paint last?+

With proper prep and quality paint, interiors stay fresh for many years and a good exterior job typically lasts 7–10 years or more depending on exposure.

Permits in Salem

Interior and exterior painting does not need a building permit.

780 CMR lists “painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, counter tops and similar finish work” as work exempt from permit. The exemption covers the finish work only — if the job turns out to need electrical, plumbing or gas work, those trades carry their own permits.

For painting work in the City of Salem, the filing goes to Salem's building and inspectional services department. As a Massachusetts Registered Home Improvement Contractor (HIC #196540) we pull the permit in our name, book the inspections and meet the inspector on site — you never have to take a day off for it. Requirements do change, so we confirm the current position with Salem's office before any work starts.

Source: 780 CMR ch. 51 (Massachusetts Residential Code), Part 2 §105 R105.2, “Work exempt from permit”. This is general information, not a substitute for your building department's own determination.
