Your local painting contractor in Cambridge

Cambridge homeowners usually call us for one of two reasons: something has failed and needs fixing properly, or they are ready to invest in a house they intend to stay in. Waterfront Construction handles both — licensed, insured painting from a Northborough team that has worked across Greater Boston since 2018.

Cambridge is in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, established in 1636 and home to roughly 118,000 people. That makes it one of the oldest communities in the state, so the older streets carry genuine antique stock — post-and-beam frames, hand-cut joinery, plaster over lath, and additions layered on across three centuries. We know the town well — from Harvard Square, Porter Square and Kendall Square to the quieter streets — and our painting crews reach Cambridge quickly from nearby Northborough. It is about 35 miles from our Northborough shop — about 45 minutes to an hour in normal traffic.

A painting project touches several trades, and the gaps between them are where problems hide. We coordinate all of them under one contract for Cambridge homeowners — one schedule, one standard, and nobody pointing at anybody else when a question comes up.

Ask us for references before you commit. We're happy to point Cambridge homeowners at completed work nearby and at the people we did it for — that conversation tells you more about a contractor than any website can.

Do I need a permit for painting in Cambridge, MA?+

No. Massachusetts lists painting as work exempt from a building permit. If the job turns out to need electrical, plumbing or gas work, those trades carry their own permits — we pull those if they apply. We file it with Cambridge's building and inspectional services department as a Registered Home Improvement Contractor (MA HIC #196540).

How long will the paint last?+

With proper prep and quality paint, interiors stay fresh for many years and a good exterior job typically lasts 7–10 years or more depending on exposure.

Permits in Cambridge

Interior and exterior painting does not need a building permit.

780 CMR lists “painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, counter tops and similar finish work” as work exempt from permit. The exemption covers the finish work only — if the job turns out to need electrical, plumbing or gas work, those trades carry their own permits.

For painting work in the City of Cambridge, the filing goes to Cambridge's building and inspectional services department. As a Massachusetts Registered Home Improvement Contractor (HIC #196540) we pull the permit in our name, book the inspections and meet the inspector on site — you never have to take a day off for it. Requirements do change, so we confirm the current position with Cambridge's office before any work starts.

Source: 780 CMR ch. 51 (Massachusetts Residential Code), Part 2 §105 R105.2, “Work exempt from permit”. This is general information, not a substitute for your building department's own determination.
